HIPAA NPI

The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is the standard unique health identifier for health care providers under HIPAA. Health care providers are required by law to apply for a National Provider Identifier (NPI). 

To apply online, visit: https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov, or call 1-800-465-3203 to request a paper application.

Compliance Dates

May 23, 2007: Use your NPI with DHS, most other big payers
May 23, 2008: Use your NPI with all health care payers
